"From the ashes of Misanthropic arises Sea of Deprivation. Agonizing vocals, thick guitars, brutal drums and political lyrics. This is one kick ass LP! If you liked Misanthropic, and other bands like Dystopia, then this is right up your dark alley! Nine songs and a Disrupt cover. My friends and I agree, Sea of Deprivation rock! (DD/Heart Attack #29)

Anyway, behind all the smoke there’s some really good music on “Gateway”. The first thing you hear when you pop this album in is static, then a slow, doomy and dirty-ass riff floats its way out like smoke comin’ out your mouth while taking a hit. The riffs on this album are catchy, doomy and groovy. And all of those riffs can be found on the complete monster of a track “Stone a Pig”. Almost 10 minutes of dirty sludge ecstasy, that’s some shit to get high to.
If you’re lookin’ for some fast songs here, you better snort some white lines and put on “Bonded by Blood” cos “Bongzilla” and “fast” don’t go together. You know all us potheads are slow and lazy. The album ranges from slow to mid-paced, and maybe even a little faster (“Sunshine Green”). The band focuses on slow, crushing riffs that’ll…crush you. The vocals aren’t so bad either, loud dirty sounding black metal-like screeching. Not something I would ever think would sound good when you’re stoned, but shit, Bongzilla proved me wrong.
There are some problems with “Gateway”, like every stoner out there Bongzilla tend to get too slow and sometimes boring. I don’t think you’d notice that while high (which is the way you’re supposed to listen to this) so it doesn’t really matter. The album ain’t too long, only 40-somethin’ minutes, so it’s a nice soundtrack to a 666lb bongsession. Go get your favorite bong, put some ice in the water, fill the bowl up with some Killer Cali (I love living in California), pop in “Gateway”, fire up and enjoy a great high.
Bongzilla is one such example. They are now three releases deep into their marijuana themed career (two full lengths and one EP) and they're obviously quite content to continue with their favorite subject of choice. Sampling various movie quotes throughout the CD, Bongzilla is making no bones about their drug of choice. Unfortunately, their monolithic approach to making music is likely to drive away anyone who hasn't taken at least three major bonghits. Despite my constant proximity to pot over the years, I never did get around to trying it and I'm certainly not going to light up a doobie simply to find out if Gateway improves while under an "enlightened" state of mind. The entire album is a series of meandering Sabbath inspired sludge rock featuring more distortion than anything coming out of the White House these days. The entire length of the CD comes across as one extended jam session, showing very little dynamic shift from song to song. It's quite easy to tune out the little buggers after the first three or four minutes and they're certainly not going to sneak in any surprises anywhere after that. Just like hardcore marijuana advocates, Bongzilla becomes nothing more than a persistant irritant within minutes.
Perhaps if you like a dingy, heavy, muck-filled record that you don't actually need to pay attention to, Gateway will prove worth digging up. But as for me, Bongzilla reminds me far too much of those wretched middle aged alcoholic men who used to sit at my bar all afternoon, talking in great lengths about booze. I quit that job. Now I'm going to quit listening to this lousy CD.
After a few years of ambiguity, the almighty west coast doomsters Noothgrush have officially called it a day after over a decade of tectonic sludge destruction, and to commemorate the career of one of the most influential American acts in the game, Throne records has decided to release a confusing compilation entitled Erode the Person. Do no think, however, that this is a reissue of the compilation of the same name that was released in the late 90..s, because this ..version.. is slightly different and contains a few tracks not appearing on the original release. Collected here are tracks from the splits with Wellington, Corrupted, Gasp, and Carol Ann, along with a whole slew of unreleased tracks and new versions of tracks that appeared on the original Erode the Person and Failing Early, Failing Often compilations. All the confusion is totally irrelevant however, because as soon as you hit play and remember all over again how incredibly devastatingly heavy this trio was, you can..t really think of else. There are so many crushing riffs here that it..s pretty impossible to even convey in words what making it through this album is like (those familiar with Noothgrush..s music know what I mean), but this is a must have for any fans interested in doom if you own nothing else from these guys.

Grief was founded in 1991 by Disrupt guitarist Terry Savastano and drummer Randy Odierno (who later switched to bass and later again left to join Bane of Existence). They broke up in 2001 mainly due to drummer problems - something that was an ongoing problem for the band from the start. They also cited what they called a "hostile environment for doom metal bands". They reunited briefly in July 2005 to play a cluster of reunion shows.
The band had several 7"s including one with Dystopia and Corrupted each. A compilation album called Turbulent Times appeared in 2002 through Southern Lord. The group reunited for one show at the first annual New England Grind And Doom Fest on July 17th, 2005 at The Middle East Cafe in Cambridge, MA. They were so excited by the response to this show that they began booking others, and they toured intermittently throughout 2005 and 2006.
In 2005, the band played shows through in venues including The Ace of Clubs and The Knitting Factory in New York, The Khyber in Philadelphia, O'Brien's in Allston/Brighton, MA, The Living Room in Providence, RI, and Cherry St. Station in CT.
In 2006 Southern Lord Records released a full length live album called Alive which featured their performance at the 2005 New England Grind And Doom Fest. The album features artwork by Eric C. Harrison, who did much of the band's painted cover artwork.
Grief's final appearance was at Emissions From The Monolith 8, a sludge/doom festival that took place in Ohio, May 2006.
The Hartford Advocate wrote the following about their 12/3/05 date at Cherry St. Station in CT:
"Since 1991, these Massholes have been writing songs about a distinctly New England flavor of depression and isolation. Jeff Hayward’s throat-shredding vocals often seem more hardcore than metal; indeed, almost 15 years later, it’s possible to see Grief as one of a handful of seminal NE bands who initiated the merger between hardcore and metal. However, unlike some of those bands, Grief still sounds both relevant and entertaining."

Dystopia formed in Orange County, California in 1991. They are considered a sludge-metal band, popular amongst both heavy metal and crust punk scenes, due in large part to their bleak, misanthropic imagery. Lyrics deal with things from human emotion to social and political issues to environmentalism to racial equality to animal rights and vegetarianism/veganism. The member were Todd Keisling on bass, Matt Parillo on guitar and vocals and Dino Sommese on drum and vocals throughout most the existence. In the real earlier year Dan Kaufman was also doing vocals.
