Noothgrush - Failing Early, Failing Often

NOOTHGRUSH - Failing Early, Failing Often

Slap A Ham( 2000 )

"Some of the most tortured sludgecore ever recorded! This collection of
studio sessions from 1995-1997 features 18 slow, painful dirges that
creep at geologic pace, but keep the track lengths pretty short (for this
sort of music, anyways). Released on the now-defunct Slap A Ham, this is a
posthumous collection of early recordings from eight sessions at
Trainwreck Studios, all of which is seminal hellish doom/sludge, less "swinging"
than the likes of Eyehategod or Weedeater, but not as abstract as Khanate
and Corrupted. Comp songs, their Slap A Ham Embraced By The Anti-Self 7",
split tracks, and the legendary Kashyyyk demo. This stuff will damage the
structural integrity of any building it's played in. Absolutely essential
for fans of burning witch and crossed out as well assunn O))) and
unearthly trance...".

REVIEW FROM IN MUSIC WE TRUST: "One way to appreciate music is to
understand the meter, or "time," it is performed in. For example, it might be "2/4
time," or "3/4 time" or "4/4 time." In the case of NOOTHGRUSH the music
is performed in "geological time." That's right, this is the band whose
riffs are so plodding that continental drift, by contrast, appears downright
hasty. Calling this music "slow" is like calling The Beatles "moderately
successful"-it's a definite understatement. "Failing Early, Failing
Often" is a posthumous collection of many (most? all?) of the early recordings
from these seminal and cranium-cracking lords of sludge. It includes songs
from several comps, their Slap A Ham 7", their split with BLACK ARMY JACKET,
and their "Kashyyyk" demo; which to this day remains one of my favorite
slowcore releases ever and is still able to undermine the structural integrity
of any building it is played in. Obviously influenced by bands like Grief,
NOOTHGRUSH, however, remain an unmistakable and vital band whose audio
carnage will be sorely missed (rumor has it the band was forced to
disband by the government who was tired of getting seismic readings in the 6
range every time NOOTHGRUSH played). In addition to all that, they are the
only band I have had a conversation with that included the words "Chewbacca
action-figure-holding bandolier." In the early 1990s the birth of seminal sludgelords Noothgrush laid to waste to the SF Bay Area. This trio spewed forth their molten musical magma over a span of eight years and carved a path of influence that resounds in the
quagmire of modern day slowcore. For the first time ever, their earliest
molasses-paced epics have been assembled on one disc. The collection
compiles material from their debut Slap A Ham seven-inch, as well as
split releases with Dead Bodies Everywhere, Agents Of Satan, and Black Army
Jacket, plus countless compilation tracks and their legendary Kashyyyk
demo!

If you dig the cranium-crushing sounds of Grief, the Melvins, or
Eyehategod, then you're prepared for only a fraction of the heaviness that
Noothgrush is prepared to deliver!

Noothgrush do more than play sludge. They are sludge. Everything about
this band oozes and crawls. Their music is as punishing and it is precise as
it is plodding. Lyrically they take concepts and ideas that in the hands
of lesser artists may seem silly (Star Wars) or overused (hate and
loathing) and they discover existential sociological and philosophical insight.
From one point of view in the extreme underground Noothgrush are hideously
deformed if for no other reason than they travel a route far less
taken; but from another perspective, and certainly one that I share, their
deformity is actually uniqueness and allows for the breeding of distinction. Y'see
there are only a handful of really stellar sludge bands around and Noothgrush
are among the best." -Jeb Branin, The Crass Menagerie"

Noothgrush - Erode The Person

After a few years of ambiguity, the almighty west coast doomsters Noothgrush have officially called it a day after over a decade of tectonic sludge destruction, and to commemorate the career of one of the most influential American acts in the game, Throne records has decided to release a confusing compilation entitled Erode the Person. Do no think, however, that this is a reissue of the compilation of the same name that was released in the late 90..s, because this ..version.. is slightly different and contains a few tracks not appearing on the original release. Collected here are tracks from the splits with Wellington, Corrupted, Gasp, and Carol Ann, along with a whole slew of unreleased tracks and new versions of tracks that appeared on the original Erode the Person and Failing Early, Failing Often compilations. All the confusion is totally irrelevant however, because as soon as you hit play and remember all over again how incredibly devastatingly heavy this trio was, you can..t really think of else. There are so many crushing riffs here that it..s pretty impossible to even convey in words what making it through this album is like (those familiar with Noothgrush..s music know what I mean), but this is a must have for any fans interested in doom if you own nothing else from these guys.

I was more than a little stoked to get this CD, which is a collection of tunes from the band's early discography. I have been a huge fan of NOOTHGRUSH since the release of their debut demo and since they steamrolled my brain during their first of man
y appearances at the Fiesta Grande. This band has taken the handoff from bands like GRIEF (an admittedly huge influence) and run for six. They do more than PLAY sludge. They ARE sludge. Everything about this band oozes and crawls. Their music is as punishing and it is precise as it is plodding. Lyrically they take concepts and ideas that in the hands of lesser artists may seem silly (Star Wars) or overused (hate and loathing) and they discover existential sociological and philosophical insight. From one point of view in the extreme underground NOOTHGRUSH are hideously deformed if for no other reason than they travel a route far less taken; but from another perspective, and certainly one that I share, their deformity is actually uniqueness and allows for the breeding of distinction.
